By exerting a strong pressure on the metal blank, the metal will undergo plastic deformation and fracture to be processed into parts. When the mechanical press works, the motor drives the large pulley (usually also used as flywheel) through the V-belt, and drives the crank slider mechanism through the gear pair and clutch to make the slider and punch go down in a straight line.
